Purchase leaves comedian moonstruck

MELISSA HANK

It's no joke — comedian, writer and actor Amy Schumer has bought the townhouse from the 1987 movie Moonstruck. New York Post reported in June that Schumer and her husband, chef Chris Fischer, were the secret buyers of the home but city property records have now confirmed the sale.

Built in 1829, the residence in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., was first listed for US$12.85 million in February and was last on the market for $11 million.

Schumer was apparently so keen on the place that she paid far more than the asking price — $12.5 million.

With five bedrooms and 31/2 bathrooms spread over 5,568 square feet (517 square metres), the townhouse measures a mere 26 feet (eight metres) wide.

It has four storeys plus a finished basement and is extensively renovated to retain many original details.

Among its features are a double parlour, antique wooden shutters and floorboards, fireplaces with original marble mantels, a mansard roof, a library, a chef's kitchen, a wine cellar and a gym. There's also a gated parking area, a rarity for the neighbourhood.

Schumer and her family currently have their five-bedroom penthouse in New York City's Upper West Side for sale. It's listed for $15 million. She and Fischer welcomed their first child, Gene, in May 2019.

Schumer is best known for her standup comedy and sketch-comedy series Inside Amy Schumer.

Moonstruck starred Cher as a widowed woman who falls in love with her fiancé's brother, played by Nicolas Cage.

The Norman Jewison film earned six Oscar nominations and won three trophies.
