Where will water be found for another million people?

Re: Vancouver has an obligation to plan for density

Robert Macdonald's recent letter in The Sun blithely asserts that, “We (Metro Vancouver) have abundant sustainable fresh water.” Is that true?

There are millions of people and hundreds of billions of dollars worldwide who would like to move to Canada, for its many advantages. Promoters and politicians regularly claim that our region may see up to another million inhabitants by 2050. At the same time, the Metro area is experiencing frequent water shortages in summer and early autumn, sometimes leading to significant water use restrictions. Climate change is worsening shortages — warmer and drier summers, warmer winters with less snow deposited in the watersheds on which we depend. Capilano, Seymour, Coquitlam, and so on.

There's no way to reverse climate change, or to expand the watersheds. We can take steps to use what water we have more efficiently, but they aren't making any more of it.

Where will the water needed for the supposed new inhabitants come from?
